In Semester 1, 2007, for the first time, QUT introduced universal online student evaluation of units and teaching in one easy-to-use survey known as LEX (Learning Experience Questionnaire).  Details of LEX and other student feedback mechanisms are described at http://www.yourfeedback.qut.edu.au.  Results for the survey will be known just after the end of each semester.

Thankyou

Many thanks to those of you who completed the LEX survey.  We appreciate the time you have taken to share your thoughts with us.  Your efforts help us to know what we’re doing well and where we should focus our efforts for improvement.  About one-third of our students gave us feedback in 2007, and we can be reliably informed in this way about how you are experiencing many aspects of our courses in most of our units.  In some units and for some teachers we didn’t receive enough feedback to draw conclusions however we will be working on ways to make giving your feedback easier so that, in the future, we can collect more reliable data.

What will we do with the information you’ve provided?

Our first priority is to respond to your feedback.  Many of the units for which you provided feedback in 2007 will not be offered again until next year so staff will plan, over the coming six months, ways to respond to your feedback.  Any changes we make to units, in response to your feedback or from our own observations, will be highlighted on the Blackboard site for the unit.  So, from next year, you’ll know how we have responded to information about our unit and teaching quality.

Your feedback about individual teachers

Any information you’ve provided about teachers will be available to those teachers, and their Heads of School, for them to reflect upon.  The Faculty requires that staff plan to share their good practice and improve in those areas where there is evidence that teaching requires focused attention.  This is a collegiate process, many staff will want to share their feedback with their colleagues and will discuss, within their course groups, the ways in which teaching is being improved in your course.  In addition the Faculty and the University provides teaching development activities to assist staff.

Your feedback about units

Any information you’ve provided about units will be available to unit coordinators, Heads of School and Course Coordinators for them to reflect upon.  The Faculty expects that Unit Coordinators will develop, with their teaching teams, a plan for sharing good practice.  Unit coordinators and Course Coordinators will work together to use your feedback to improve the ways in which units are developed and delivered.  The Faculty and the University provides development activities to assist staff in the design and implementation of units.

If you would like to read more about how the Faculty is organised to improve teaching quality please refer to the the Faculty’s Teaching Quality Improvement Plan at http://www.bee.qut.edu.au/staff/tl/tqip.jsp.   Please contact me if you would like further information about the LEX, how we use your feedback to improve teaching and unit quality and the other activities we are undertaking to provide the best teaching and learning environments we can for you.
