Industrial Experience or work experience is a compulsory component of the following courses within the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering:

  • Bachelor of Technology (Civil)
  • Bachelor of Technology (Mechanical)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Aerospace Avionics)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Computer Engineering)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Engineering Management and Information Systems)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Civil)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Infomechatronics)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Medical)
  • Bachelor of Engineering - double degrees
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Systems)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Telecommunications)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental Management)
  • Bachelor of Surveying

All students enrolled in these courses must complete Industrial Experience. The Institution of Engineers, Australia also requires that students obtain relevant practical experience during their engineering courses.

The Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering at the Queensland University of Technology assists students to find Industrial Experience during the University vacation period, also available though the semester. This service is primarily offered because it is a requirement of the engineering and surveying degrees that the students complete a total of twelve, or eighteen weeks respectively, of Industrial Experience. The Faculty seeks the assistance of companies within both the public and private sector in order to secure employment for students during the University vacation period.

For ease of administration the engineering employment requirement is divided into two periods of six weeks each. The surveying employment requirement is divided into 3 periods of six weeks. All industrial experience periods may be completed in periods of shorter or longer duration. The work may be accumulated by regular short periods of employments with the same employer or may be built up by casual employment with different employers. In order for credit to be received there is a further requirement that a minimum period of one week of employment or its equivalent be with any one employer. It is also essential that the various employers for whom the student has worked must each certify that the work is satisfactory.

For the first six weeks of the engineering employment there is no restriction on the branch of engineering but it must be in an industry related to the engineering profession and associated trades and industries. For the final six weeks of the engineering employment students must be employed for a company which has work related to the specific engineering degree in which the student is enrolled eg. a civil engineering student must be employed in connection with a civil engineering firm or project.

If you believe your company can assist the Faculty by offering employment to one or more students please contact the Student Services Officer.
