Q: What is a second major?

A: A second major is a set of 8 units which some students can choose to compliment their course. If eligible, ONE second major is chosen.

Q: What is a major B?

A: A 'Major B' is the term used within QUT Virtual for a Second Major.

Q: What is a minor?

A: A minor is a set of 4 units which some students can choose to complement their course. If eligible, students can choose up to TWO minors.

Q: What is a primary major?

A: A primary major is the defining component of your course and is the major into which you were enrolled upon your entry into the university or via the appropriate application process. This is the study area that is printed in brackets on your parchment at graduation, for example: Bachelor of Design (Architectural Studies).

Q: Can I do a second major or minor?

A: You must check your Course Summary Sheet to find out. It will tell you exactly what you can and can't do.

Q: How many second majors & minors can I do?

A: If eligible (find out by checking your Course Summary Sheet), you can enrol in either one second major or up to two minors.

Q: Can I choose a second major or minor which is the same as my primary major discipline? 

(e.g.. Primary major: Architectural Studies, Second Major: Architectural Studies B, Minor: Architectural History & Theory)

A: No. You cannot choose a second major or minor which is in your primary discipline area.

Q: More than 8 units are listed for my chosen second major. Do I have to do all of them?

A: No. A second major only requires you to choose 8 units within your course structure. Check out your Course Summary Sheet and be sure to check and follow the specific rules of the second major such as when units are offerred and prerequisites etc.

Q: I'm trying to enrol in my second major/minor units on QV but it won't let me submit?

A: You must select all your units including your second major or minor units for the entire academic year (both Semester 1 & 2) before submitting.

Q: I want to change my primary major. Can I do it while I'm selecting my second major or minor?

A: No. Applications for changing your primary major or course need to be submitted via a CM Online Form.

Q: I have chosen to do a second major or minor outside the BEE Faculty. What do I do?

A: You will need to complete and submit a Non-BEE Second Major/Minor Approval form. Refer to the University Wide Unit Sets to view your options. You will be advised if your option/s are approved.

Q: How do I enrol in my Non-BEE second major/minor on QV?

A: For Non-BEE second majors select from the drop down option list: EXM Non-BEE Major.

For Non-BEE minors select from the drop down option list: EXA Non-BEE Minor 1 or EXB Non-BEE Minor 2.
