What is Interior Design?

Interior Design is concerned with the design and production of safe, functional and aesthetically meaningful interior environments.

As well as technical knowledge, interior designers call on theoretical knowledge of how people interact with their environments. Designers' decisions on planning, servicing, fittings, furnishing and finishing are informed by this knowledge.

In everyday practice, interior designers are responsible for:

  • developing briefs, concepts and design proposals
  • documenting design proposals for approval, tendering and construction
  • supervising construction
  • administering contracts
  • carrying out postoccupancy evaluations

Interior Designers often work as part of a team that may include architects, builders, project managers, engineering consultants, shop fitters, cabinet makers, furniture suppliers and materials suppliers.

Why choose Interior Design at QUT?

Interior Design at QUT aims to contribute to the advancement of the discipline and profession of Interior Design through teaching, research and community service. The course is recognised nationally and internationally.
