What is Architecture?

Architecture shapes and transforms the environment in which we live through the creative and functional design of buildings. Architects use creativity and a practical understanding of structures and materials to develop concepts, plans, specifications and detailed drawings for buildings and other structures. They negotiate with builders and planning authorities, administer building contracts and inspect the work carried out.

Architects may also be involved in:

  • project feasibility studies
  • strategic asset investigations
  • heritage studies
  • urban planning
  • interior design or
  • landscape design

They often specialise in particular types of work, for example, domestic, lowrise commercial, high-rise commercial, industrial, conservation and heritage buildings. Architects need to keep up with changing trends in the construction industry and the community and have considerable contact with the public.

Why choose Architecture at QUT?

Architecture at QUT incorporates the study of Architecture by combining both academic studies and on-the-job education giving you a relevant and meaningful University experience.

QUT is one of the few universities in Australia that allows you the opportunity to undertake professional experience as part of your course. You will also undertake hands-on building work and model making in QUT's well-equipped workshops.

Throughout the course you will work through real problems, often with real clients. This increases your practical experience, bringing you one step closer to working as an architect. After graduation you can become a member of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects and, on completion of additional professional architectural experience and the successful completion of the Architectural Practice Examination, you will be eligible to be a registered architect with the Board of Architects in any state of Australia.
