When does Uni start?
For Uni starting times see Calendar, Dates and Teaching Periods on the QUT website.

Unit Contact Hours:

A unit generally has 3 – 4 contact hours per week. This may be a combination of lectures and tutorials/ studios or laboratories.
The credit point value of a unit can provide you with a guideline as to the approximate number of hours per week you should be spending on that unit, including contact and non-contact hours. Most units at QUT are worth 12 credit points, so that would mean 12 hours per week per unit. Of course, your needs will vary throughout the semester – you may find it hard to spend so much time on a unit in the first couple of weeks, whereas you will probably need more when exams or assignments are due. Think of this figure as an average – a goal to aim for, rather than a strict rule.

Study Costs:
Study costs vary depending on the type of student you are enrolled as. Unit related costs such as textbooks are in addition to course fees.  More information regarding fees is available by calling the Student Information Line on 3138 2000 or from the Student Services web site.

Enrolling

Can I change my primary major within my course?

You can apply to change your primary major upon completion of one semester of full-time study.  To apply to change your primary major you use an CM Form.

Can I change my course?

If you wish to change to another course within BEE, you need to fill out a QUT R/I Form (or an F Form if you are an international student).

If you wish to change to another course outside BEE, you will need to re-apply through QTAC.

How do I know which units to enrol in?

Your course summary sheet outlines which units you should undertake. This can be found by going to your personal profile on QUT Virtual. When choosing units you should always check the semester in which the unit is offered as well as the timetable

Can I do a second major?

Your course summary sheet outlines the second major or minors options available under your primary major. In BEE each course and primary major has rules around the offering of second majors, refer to your course summary sheet for more infomation. This is due to the professional nature of the courses. In BEE a second major is a defined group of 8 units. For information on Major Offerings refer to the BEE website.

How many second majors can I do?

In BEE you can only undertake one second major or two minors if elligible. Please refer to your Course Summary Sheet.

Can I do a minor?

Your course summary sheet outlines the second major or minors options available under your primary major. In BEE each course and primary majors has rules around the offering of minors, refer to your course summary sheet for more information. This is due to the professional nature of the courses. In BEE a minor is a defined group of 4 units. For information on Minor Offerings refer to the BEE website.

How many minors can I do?

Depending upon the rules around your course and your primary major you may choose two minors instead of a second major.  You must check your Course Summary Sheet to see what you are eligible to undertake.

How many second majors and minors can I do?

You may be able to undertake either a second major or two minors.  You cannot do both and you must check your course summary sheet to ensure there are not other special arrangements for your course and your major.  These special arrangements are due to the professional nature of your course.

How many subjects do I have to undertake to make me eligible for Youth Allowance/Austudy?
You will have to take at least 75 per cent of the normal full-time student workload each semester. This means that you will have to take at least three x 12 credit point units.

Can I change from full-time to part-time, or part-time to full-time?

Enrolling in 1-2 units a semester makes you a part time student; 3-4 units a semester is a full-time work load. Please note that some course are only structured for a full-time work load. Once you have entered your enrolment on QUT Virtual the system will automatically update your enrolment status.  If you are receiving Centrelink payments you are required to maintain a full-time enrolment. International students on student Visas have additional requirements around course progression. Contact International Student Services for more information.

Can I take more than four units in a semester?

This is referred to as ‘overloading’.  Students in their first year are not permitted to undertake an overload.  If, in subsequent years of your study you wish to consider undertaking an overload you must consult with your Course Coordinator or Subject Area Coordinator.  Students in double degrees may be required to take an overload as standard enrolment progression.

What does GP, CA, KG, CB mean?

QUT has four campuses: Gardens Point (GP), Carseldine (CA), Kelvin Grove (KG) and Caboolture (CB).  When you are selecting enrolment you should ensure that you know at which campus the unit will be taught and assessed. You need to be aware of this when enrolling in second Majors or Minors from Faculties other than Built Environment and Engineering.

Can I take a break from my degree?

Domestic students who have completed a semester of study are automatically eligible for up to a year of Leave of Absence.  Leave of Absence is permitted for International Students only under medical grounds or exceptional compassionate circumstances.  International students must seek advice from Student Centres before submitting an application for a leave of absence.

Can I study units at another university and have them count towards my QUT degree?

Cross-institutional study is available to students. Students must have prior approval from their Course Coordinator.

Can I take units over the summer program?

BEE offers a limited number of units for enrolment over the Summer Program. Enrolment for summer units is the same as for regular semesters, i.e. through your student profile on QUT Virtual.

Can I apply for credit / RPL / advanced standing from my previous course?

If you have prior study in a recognised diploma or degree you are eligible to apply for credit by submitting an Application for Advanced Standing (AS) Form along with an official transcript and unit outlines of the subject you studied. Note: It can take from 4-8 weeks to process applications, depending on the application.

How do I complete my enrolment form if I have applied for advanced standing (academic credit) but haven't been notified that it is approved or rejected?
It is important that you lodge your Application for Advanced Standing (AS) Form as soon as possible as they can take up to 8 weeks to process. You shouldn't assume that your request for credit will be approved, especially if you have not discussed this with your Course Coordinator in advance. You should attend classes in the standard enrolment program, as well as in those units you believe you will enrol in if your credit is approved.

I have transferred from another course and I can't see any advanced standing (academic credit) on my enrolment. why?
Advanced Standing is generally not automatically transferred across courses. You need to complete an Application for Advanced Standing (AS) Form.

Who do I contact to find out what the status is of my application?
Applications are processed by Student Business Services. Credit requests for units on the QUT Credit Precedence List (CPL) are approved or rejected by the Credit Office and you are advised of the outcome. Applications for credit not on the CPL are sent to the Faculty for processing. If you wish to find out the status of an application you have submitted, contact Student Business Services on 3138 2000.

Can I enrol in different units to the ones listed on my course summary sheet?

You should not enrol in units that are not listed under your primary major on your course summary sheet.

Can I enrol in an advanced unit without first completing the pre-requisite?  Can I take the pre-requisite unit and the more advanced unit in the same semester?

No. In BEE we use the term “assumed knowledge” in relation to pre-requisites.  Pre-requisite Units are designed as a stepping stone to the advanced unit. The basic information in the first unit is needed to pass a unit at the next level.

My unit outline says this unit is ‘incompatible’ with another unit. What does this mean?

Incompatible units may not be taken in the same course. Incompatible units are generally where a unit changes its unit code and title; however. the content in the new unit code remains the same or is very similar to that of the content in the old code, it is therefore not necessary to include the unit in the course again.

Can I study a postgraduate unit?

No. Bachelor students are only permitted to enrol in undergraduate units without prior approval from their Course or Subject Area Coordinator. Undergraduate units have codes ending in “B” – e.g. CNB101 Construction 1.

I want to alter my enrolment. How do I do it?

You can alter your enrolment through QUT Virtual so long as you have not passed the Final Dates for alteration of enrolment.

I have been unsuccessful in passing a unit. What do I do?
You will need to repeat the unit in order to successfully complete your course. Many students overload their workload by one unit in order to repeat a unit and some increase the number of semesters they need in order to complete their course. For further assistance contact your Course or Subject Area Coordinator or visit a BEE Student Services counter.

I've been put on probation. What does this mean?
If you achieve a Grade Point Average (GPA) of less than 3.00 or have failed a unit more than once you can be put on probation in accordance with Student Rule 6 for Unsatisfactory Academic Performance. This means that the university will monitor your results for the next academic period and take any further action. If you are put on probation you are expected to seek academic advice from your Course Coordinator and/or seek assistance from other QUT services (e.g. Counselling) as required.

If you are having difficulty with your academic study you should discuss this with your Course or Subject Area Coordinator as early in the year as possible to discuss options and to avoid exclusion from the course.

I've been excluded from my course. What does this mean?
If you achieve a low GPA or repeatedly fail one or more units you can be excluded from your course in accordance with Student Rule 6. Students' records are reviewed at the end of each year. Refer to Student Rule Unsatisfactory Academic Performance. Students may appeal against exclusion in accordance with Student Rule 8 Review and Appeals. Note: An application to be readmitted into the course will not be considered until 12 months has lapsed in accordance with Student Rule 6.43 Enrolment Following Exclusion.

Assessment / Assignments

What is a Unit Outline and where do I find it?
Unit Outlines are available on QUT Virtual, and contain information about the unit's aims and objectives, including details of assessment and required texts. Unit outlines are contracts between the university and the student, and are prepared for each unit taught in the Faculty.

How do I hand in assignments?
The University uses  Assignment Minder (AM) for the submission of assignments.  Unless you are otherwise advised by your lecturer, all BEE written assignments should be submitted by the due date to the Student Computing Help Desk in V lab - Level 2 V Block, Gardens Point campus.

All assignments must be submitted 15 minutes prior to the closing hours of the QUT Student Computing Helpdesks. The computer assignment system will not accept submissions after these times. Further details are available on How to Submit BEE Written Assignments.

What happens if I am late in submitting an assignment?
Concession is not given for Late Submission of assignments except when extenuating circumstances exist and you have should submitted an Assignment Extension Request Form to BEE Student Services no later than 3 working days after the assignment due date, along with original or certified supporting documentation,

It seems my assignment has been lost, what should I do?

You need to contact your unit coordinator in order to inform them of your loss. You may need to provide proof that you handed in the assignment.

I am having difficulty in understanding what I need to do for my assignment. who should I see?
Your first point of contact should be the tutor in charge of the tutorial/ workshop to which you are allocated. If you still have questions about the assessment, then you should contact the Unit Coordinator. Contact details are available for each unit coordinator on the unit outline. While the Unit Coordinator is responsible for the delivery of the unit, the Course Coordinator is responsible for overall course content, so, if you still have issues with what you need to do, then make an appointment with the Course Coordinator.

If you are not sure of the format you should use for your written assignment, refer to the on-line information in QUT Cite|Write.

What is QUT Cite|Write? How do I get a copy?

In February 2008, QUT will release QUT Cite|Write, the new University-wide referencing, citing and writing guide. The new guide will enhance useability and access for students to information about citing, referencing and writing academically at QUT. It will also promote application of standard principles of referencing and academic writing for students during their study. IMPORTANT TO NOTE: This product will replace "The Written Assignment".

QUT Cite|Write will be freely available to all commencing students.  Continuing students will be able to access/print the guide online, or purchase a copy from the QUT Bookshop.

There is a group assessment item in my unit. What is the procedure for submitting this?

Your unit coordinator or tutor will explain the process to be used. Group assessment items are not always submitted through Assignment Minder.

What if I am given a mark for an assignment or examination with which I disagree?
If it is a specific piece of assessment speak to your lecturer, unit coordinator or tutor to review your assessment. If the issue is not resolved to your satisfaction you may apply for a Review of Grade up until 10 days after the release of exam results.

My unit outline tells me there are heavy penalties for Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism? Please explain what this means.
Academic Dishonesty means an action or practice which may compromise or defeat the purposes of assessment, and includes, but is not limited to - cheating, or attempting to cheat; plagiarism; misrepresenting or fabricating data or results or other assessable work; breaching requirements specified by university academic board under rule 32 for conduct during examinations, in a way that may compromise or defeat the purposes of the assessment.

Plagiarism means that ideas, not your own are used in an assignment without proper reference to their source. In short, plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work as if you created and wrote it yourself.

Refer to:

QUT Manual of Policies and Procedures (MoPP) Policy C/9.3 “Procedures for Academic Dishonesty

QUT Student Rule # 29 “Academic Dishonesty” .

What do I do if I have a problem with my end of semester exam timetable?
You should check the preliminary draft timetables for clashes, or other concerns, as soon as they are available on QUT Virtual.  Please email any concerns to BEE Enquiries as soon as possible. The QUT Examinations Office has strict policy regarding the required availability of student for exams, and the number and frequency of timetabled exams.

I may be out of town during the exam period. Will this be a problem?
Students must remain available during the exam period. The Examinations Office website lists the QUT exams policy.

Will all my examination assessment be held during the QUT central examination timetable period?
No, some units may have school-based examinations. These may be held at any time during the semester as part of your assessment.  Your unit outline or unit coordinator will advise you of the date and time of a School-based exam.

I’ve been ill or experienced other problems that, while I am able to sit my exams, I feel will this has affected my ability to study for them. Who should I make aware of this?

You may be eligible for special consideration. An application for Special Consideration needs to be submitted prior to or within three working days before the exam / assessment is due.

You will need to include:

I live overseas and I want to go back to my home country as soon as the exam period is over. Is this o.k?

You should make arrangements to return home once the entire examination period is over. If you are in your final year (i.e. you have 96 credit points or less remaining to pass in your course), you should remain in Brisbane until after the release of your results. You may be eligible to sit for a supplementary exam, which are offered only in Brisbane.

What is a supplementary exam?

Please refer to the QUT policy on Supplementary Examinations.

I see that 3 is classified as a ‘low pass’, Can I get all 3’s for my units and still graduate from the course?

Students enrolled in BEE courses may graduate with a maximum of 12.5% total credit point grades of 3. If you have exceeded the limit of grades of 3 allowed under your course, you should seek advice from your Course Coordinator or Subject Area Coordinator. Under usual circumstances, you will need to re-enrol in units in order to meet the maximum total of 3’s allowed.

When are my semester’s results available, and how do I find out about them?
Your final semester grades are released by the Examinations Office. The Academic Calendar lists dates when results are released each semester. Following these release dates, results can be accessed through your personal profile on QUT Virtual.

I went to QUT Virtual and found I could not access my personal profile to find out my results. why would this be?

You may have been sanctioned. This happens if you have not paid fees, returned Faculty equipment or not returned library items. You need to find out what the sanction is and rectify it, then your personal profile will be available once more. QUT staff will not provide you with details of your results while there is a sanction

I thought I would receive a higher grade for my unit. What do I need to do to action a review of my paper / grade?

Your first step should be to make an appointment to see your lecturer / unit coordinator in order to discuss the relevant pieces of assessment. If, after this, you feel there has been an error in the marking of your work that can not be resolved directly with your unit coordinator then you should submit a Review of Grade (RG) Form to the Student Centre. Note: This submission must be completed within two weeks of the release of grades.

More information on Review of Grade.

If you are dissatisfied with the outcome of the Review of Grade you may take further action in accordance with Student Rule 8.46 Review of Grades & Academic Rulings.

What does Grade Point Average mean?
The Grade Point Average (GPA) is a numerical index which summarises your academic performance in a course over the period of your enrolment in the course. This is reported on the Statement of Academic Record. Two values of the GPA are given: the GPA for the semester and the GPA in the course. Only units that are awarded a numerical grade and the result "Withdrawn -Failure" (which is converted to a 1) are included in the GPA. Only QUT units are included (not units taken at an external institution) and unfinalised results are not included in the calculation.

I did badly during the year and my results show I’ve failed units. What will happen?
You are expected to maintain a satisfactory level of performance in your studies. Otherwise you may be placed on Probationary Enrolment, which may lead to Exclusion from your course. More information on Probationary Enrolment & Exclusion.

Timetable

Where can I find class timetables?
Your Personal Profile on QUT Virtual will display the times for the subjects in which you are currently enrolled.

The complete list of class timetables can be found on the QUT Virtual Class and Exam Timetables page. You can use the class timetable search option to find times for the subjects in which you are not enrolled.

When is the timetable released?

QUT prepares its timetable a semester in advance, and publishes it on Virtual at the beginning of Week 11 for the upcoming Semester.

Do lectures and tutorials always begin in week 1?
Lectures generally begin in Week 1. Most tutorials/studios/pracs begin in Week 2. Check your Unit Outline.

Will there be night classes?
The University is open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Friday. It is possible that your timetable could include both day and night lectures and tutorials.

Who will be lecturing?
Lecturers at the QUT Faculty of  Built Environment and Engineering have a strong balance of professional and academic experience.

I have a timetable clash with my lectures. What do I do?

Clashes of Lectures should not occur. If you believe you have a clash email BEE Student Services as soon as possible. If you are taking a non-standard programme, your clash may not be able to be resolved.

I find that I have a clash with a compulsory unit and the one I’ve chosen to do as part of my second Major (or minor). Who should I see to organise an alternate program?

First make sure that there is no other unit in your chosen second Major (or minor) that will fit better into your timetable. If you have no options, contact your Course Coordinator. They may be able to recommend an alternate program. If not, you will need to change your choice of second Major (or minor).

Class allocations

How do I arrange my class timetable?
Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering students are required to allocate themselves to classes each semester for any unit that uses the Class Allocation System (CAS) via QUT Virtual.

Note: Not all Faculty of BEE units use the Class Allocation System. For these, you need to attend the lecture in Week 1. Your unit coordinator will organise allocations at this time.

What do I need to have to be able to allocate correctly?

  • You need to have enrolled in your units via QV. Use the Step-By-Step Guide to walk you through the entire enrolment process including CAS.
  • A current enrolment program and your Course Summary Sheet.
  • Internet access
  • Your QUT-access username and password. Having Problems? Contact the IT Helpdesk on 07 3138 2898.

What is the Class Allocation System (CAS)?

CAS is the system used by which BEE students allocate themeselves to lectures/studios/tutorials for their units each system.

Do I need to allocate myself?

All students will need to allocate themselves to their lectures/studios/tutorials where stipulated. If your lecture/studio/tutorial is not listed then you do not need to allocate yourself. Refer back to the set class timetable for your lecture/studio/tutorial allocated time. There are no options avaialble.

What do I need to have to allocate?

  • You need to have enrolled in your units via QV. Use the Step-By-Step Guide to walk you through the entire enrolment process including CAS.
  • A current enrollment program and your Course Summary Sheet.
  • Internet access
  • Your QUT-access username and password. Having Problems? Contact the IT Helpdesk on 07 3138 2898.

How do I allocate?

  • Access CAS via your QV On-line Enrolment portal. In your Personal Profile Page select the link to View Class Allocations.
  • This is the part of the enrolment process where your choose your preferred studio/tutorial times. You only need to do this for units where there is more than one available.
  • If your lecture/studio/tutorial is not listed, refer back tot he set class timetable. There are no options.
  • you need to allocate for tutorials and lectures unless where the system allocates automatically.
  • you can only allocate yourself into tutorials for units that you are currently enrolled in.
  • once you have allocated yourself to a class for your unit/s, this is the one that you attend for the remainder of the semester.

Can I attend an alternative lecture to the one I have allocated to?

No. In order to provide a safe and comfortable learning environment, you must ONLY attend the lecture and tutorial class that you are allocated to in the system.

When will class allocations be released?

Find out the Important dates and information for your units at the "View units registered on class allocations" page in QUT Virtual.  You cannot allocate before the system is open.

I am enrolled in BEB100. Which lecture do I allocate for?

In BEB100 you need to attend the lecture that is listed for your course (either Design LDE, Engineering LEN or Urban Development LUD). You must then choose ONE tutorial that is relevant to your course.

Do my tutorials start in Week One?

Not all tutorials commence in Week One. Check your Unit Outline.

Why won't the system let me allocate to a class?

  • You can only allocate to a class for units that you are currently enrolled in.
  • You may have a timetable clash.
  • The class is full.

I have a timetable clash. What do I do?

If you have a timetable clash between tutorials please contact the relevant Unit Coordinator directly. (Your timetable will list your Unit Coordinator and you can do a Person Search on the QV homepage for their contact details.)

The class I want is full. What do I do?

You will need to select another class. If you are a full time student you must make yourself available for classes across the whole week.

I only class I can attend is full. What do I do?

Contact your Lecturer directly to discuss your reasons on why you require allocating to the particular class. The unit coordinator may or may not grant your request.

Important Guidelines

  • If you are a full-time student you must make yourself available for classes across the whole week.
  • If a class is indicated as "full" you will not be able to allocate yourself to this class, and you will need to choose another time.
  • Please ensure you are correctly allocated to a class for all your units prior to the commencement of semester in order to minimise disruption to your timetable.
  • The class allocation system was introduced in order to provide equity for all students when allocating to classes. Tutorials and workshops are ‘capped’ at a certain number – the number is driven by the size of the room and QUT’s Workplace Health and Safety regulations.

Practical allocations

How do I choose my practical sessions?

Students who are required to allocate for Pracs will be emailed by their Unit Coordinator in Week 1 with directions. Prac Allocations are done via the BEE Practical Allocation System.

  • No food or damaging items are to be stored in lockers.
  • Note: QUT accepts no responsibility for any property stored in or around lockers.

What happens if I am sanctioned?
You will not be able to re-enrol in any future teaching periods or access your results for Semester 2.

How do I have the sanction lifted?

  • return the locker key to BEE Student Services;

           or

  • pay a $20.00 replacement fee.

What if I lose my key?

A $20.00 replacement fee must be paid. To do this, the procedure below should be followed:

  • show a BEE Student Services Officer your student identification card and report the loss of the key;
  • The Student Services Officer will give you  a signed Request for Receipt Form  for the Locker Key Replacement Fee
  • take the form, together with the $20.00 payment,  to the Cashier, Student Centre, Level 1, A Block;
  • return with receipt to the BEE Student Services Officer, who will then record the payment and receipt on a central database;
If you lose your key during the academic year, you will have to wait for the replacement key to be issued before you can access your locker.
