The Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering (BEE) is a leader in fundamental and applied research that benefits industry, the professions and the community. Staff and students share a unique opportunity for cross-disciplinary interaction within internationally-respected research groups. The Faculty employs innovative teaching and research methods that develop the technical knowledge and management skills critical to career advancement.
The faculty has four research themes: design, infrastructure, medical engineering and smart systems.

The Research Portfolio Office exists to support Research staff and students within the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering.

Design research
The design theme includes research into architecture, industrial design,
interior design,
landscape architecture and
urban design.
Infrastructure research
The Infrastructure Research Theme's vision is to establish a national and international reputation for infrastructure related research in key selected areas by creating and disseminating fundamental and applied knowledge.
Medical Engineering research
Information incorporating research related to medical engineering under this theme including
paediatrics, spine research, orthopaedic research and traumatology research
Smart Systems research
Smart Systems refers to a user-oriented approach that links design and new technologies to boost industry productivity and improve the way we live.
Other Faculty Research
Project Management research
The Project Management Academy (PMA) is dedicated to research and development in project management across all industries and sectors.
Collaborative centres
The Faculty is a major contributor to external research organisations, including the Cooperative Research Centres: the CRC for Railway Technologies, the CRC for Integrated Engineering Asset Management (CIEAM), the CRC for Construction Innovation, as well as the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute, the Queensland Sustainable Energy Industry Development Group, Australasian Centre for Interactive Design (ACID), Australian Research Centre for Aerospace Automation (ARCAA) and QUT Institutes such as the Institute for Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI), Institute for Security Information (ISI), Institute for Sustainable Resources (ISR), Institute for Creative Industries and Innovation (iCi) and the Centre for Subtropical Design.
