Past Events 2007BEE-End of Year EventThe end of 2007 was marked with celebratory drinks and games of pool at the campus Guild Bar. Over 50 postgrads, the staff of the research portfolio and even some academics joined in the celebration. In the cheerful but laid back atmosphere, students and staff could get together and celebrate the successes of the year and drink away the sorrows of research. The festive atmosphere was highlighted by the drawing of lucky door prizes. Thanks go out to all those who supported HDR events throughout the year! Table-Tennis Friendly Tournament: 18 October 2007The 2007 Semester 2 table tennis friendly (but very intense) tournament was held over Wednesday and Thursday 17/18 October. Competitors were able to participate in the men's singles, ladies singles and doubles tournaments. It was great to see many staff and students really get into the event and enjoy themselves. Tenpin Bowling: 2 August 2007The HDR society held its second tenpin bowling event on Thursday. Over 30 research students and staff ambled up to Strike Bowling in the Wintergarden. In between celebrating strikes and commiserating over gutter-balls, research students and staff socialised in a lively but easy-going setting. Despite an afternoon of study, it was found that there was insufficient evidence to determine the impact of beverages on getting strikes (or avoiding gutter-balls). Consequently, more extra-curricula funding might be needed to further investigate whether such beverages enhance bowling performance or not. Congratulations go to Mitch and Tom (both from Smart Systems) for getting the highest scores!Volleyball Social Morning: 14 June 2007HDR Society representatives hosted a volley ball social morning and lunch in the Botanic Gardens nearby. This was well- attended with faces both old and new participating in four-a-side volleyball matches for two energetic hours. Perfect winter weather, cold drinks and the prospect of a tasty lunch from Subway provided the backdrop for another successful HDR Society event. This was enjoyed by about 40 members of the staff and student body, who played, cheered, umpired or just lazed on the grass in what was a very relaxing morning. Congratulations to the organisers again! Table Tennis Tournament Number 1: April 2007The Higher Degree Research Student Society organised an inaugural table tennis tournament in the space we have had cleared in P302. Student Society members Henry Shih was responsible for the nominations, draw and executive decisions on umpiring and scoring, while the other committee members Rebekah Davis, Daniel Sin, Paul Wu, Wageeh Boles and Diane Kolomeitz helped with the general organisation, prizes and umpiring. Competitors could nominate in any two of four sections, and it was great to see many postgraduate students and staff members enter into the spirit of play. Many members of the HDR Student Society as well as the Research Portfolio were seen exhibiting amazing feats of skill and daring, many only surpassed by the even more amazing feats of skill of others … On behalf of the HDR Student Society, our thanks go to all of those competitors and spectators who supported this event over the two days on which it was conducted. The Society intends to run further competitions in the future, and you are all encouraged to participate. Photographs, taken by Frank Lin, are sure to provide you with lots of action shots and will be added to this page soon. The results of competition in the four sections were: Postgraduate Men’s Singles: Winner – Henry Shih Runner Up – Alireza Nami Postgraduate Women’s Singles: Winner – Rahila Hareer Runner Up – Fiona Cheung Staff Singles: Winner – Cheng Yan Runner Up – Alireza Nami Doubles: Winners – Prasad Yarlagadda and Cheng Yan Runners Up – Zaini Ahmad and Jigme Dorji Congratulations All! Past events 2006:The Higher Degree Research Student Society inaugural lunch in September was enjoyed by the fifty odd students who attended. The Tenpin Bowling event at Strike Wintergarden on Friday 13 October was an outstanding success and we hope to repeat a bowling event such as this during 2007. |
