Tribology is the study of friction, lubrication and wear, and is essentially about the interaction of material surfaces. Research on materials surfaces, and especially the modification of material surfaces is a key aspect of tribology. Together, materials and tribology are integral parts of the design and maintenance of machinery and equipment.
