Scholarships to undertake research leading to PhD and Masters are available from the Australian Post-graduate Research Award program and the QUT Post-graduate Research Award program for prospective candidates. In addition, top-up scholarships and tutoring are also available.

Postgraduate scholarship top-ups in the range of $6,000-$10,000/annum (tax free) above the APA (Australian Postgraduate Awards) and QUTPRA (QUT Postgraduate Research Awards) will be paid to outstanding candidates who are successful in obtaining one of these two awards at QUT. The 2008 full-time rate for these awards is $20,007/annum (tax free, indexed annually), plus allowances including relocation expenses and a thesis allowance. Top-ups in the above range are available for selected projects funded by industry/government organisations.

Information on how to apply for scholarships, including closing dates and eligibility, can be obtained from the QUT Research Students Centre. Applicants must be Australian citizens or have permanent residency in Australia.

PhD Scholarships

Faculty of Built Environment & Engineering and Information Security Institute

QUT Brisbane

Up to $35,000 pa tax free.

Applications are invited from appropriately qualified individuals for a PhD Scholarship in the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering and the Information Security Institute at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane.

As one of Australia's largest universities, QUT has a solid record of success in solving problems for industry and the community, and developing new products and processes.

The Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering and the Information Security Institute is offering a Scholarship for a successful PhD candidate to work on the following projects:

Video Surveillance and Video Processing

The aim of this project is to research and develop signal processing techniques for an automated video surveillance system for real-time and post-event detection applications. The system will locate, track, and identify people as well detect events, and suspicious human activity using video feeds from a multi-camera surveillance network.

The candidate for this project should have an undergraduate degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or related field with 1st class Honours (or equivalent) and sound mathematical and computing skills as well as a background in signal processing.

The candidate will conduct his/her research in the Image and Video Research laboratory within the Research Program of Speech, Audio, Image and Video Technologies (SAIVT) of the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering and the Information Security Institute of QUT.  The SAIVT research program conducts leading research in the areas of Speech, Audio, Image and Video Technologies. Research in these areas are funded by grants from the Australian Research Council and several commonwealth organizations as well as from Industries.

Audio Data Mining and Speech Processing

The aim of this project is to research and develop signal processing techniques to automatically search large audio databases to automatically detect audio events, determine spoken language and the speech content, determine the topic of speech, and also spot speakers and identify them.

The candidate for this project should have an undergraduate degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or related field with 1st class Honours (or equivalent) and sound mathematical and computing skills as well as a background in signal processing.

Audio Visual Speech Recognition in Vehicles

The aim of this project is to conduct research into the use of visual information from a speaker’s lip movements to improve the performance of audio based speech recognition in cars. The system is to be used for voice control of the car navigation system and other car functions.

This research project is supported by Commonwealth funded Co-operative Research centre for Advanced Automotive Technolgy. (Auto CRC). The candidate will conduct his/her research in the Image and Video Research laboratory within the Research Program of Speech, Audio, Image and Video Technologies (SAIVT) of the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering and the Information Security Institute of QUT.  The SAIVT research program conducts leading research in the areas of Speech, Audio, Image and Video Technologies. Research in these areas are funded by grants from the Australian Research Council and several commonwealth organizations as well as from Industries.
